Food: snacks たい焼き

A cake baked in the shape of a snapper fish. The batter is poured into the mould, almost like a pancake, and the filling is added. Customers can see the process from behind glass. Very entertaining. Each 130 yen.

House: kitchen 手ぬぐい

Hand towel  手ぬぐい  てぬぐい  tenugui

A 手ぬぐい てぬぐい tenugui is a cheap cotton hand towel one might use in the kitchen. However, increasingly the hand towel trade is invaded by the tourist industry. One can buy hand towels of any sort, type and quality. Just the other day we found a little hand towel with all sorts of Japanese images on it. Although the words are in rōmaji, the pictures should make it clear to any student what they are.

Food: yakitori skewers 串

H25mainimg01

This kanji 串くし kushi skewer indicates that this restaurant specialises in BBQ-style cooking, like 焼き鳥 やきとり yakitori and an adjusted type of 天ぷら てんぷら tenpura.

The name of the restaurant in kanji is not altogether clear as to how to pronounce it and what the meaning is. Please, ask the owner. Mind you, he must have known that too, so he added the alphabet. In any case, he skewers everything.

The advantage of skewered meat is hygiene, but one can also easily prepare a wide range of morsels of delicious food; flavours aren't mixed.

This restaurant specialises in grilled fish. Turn the skewers as you go.

Sometimes such restaurants have huge holding tanks with such fish at the entrance to the restaurant. Such displays encourage the diner to eat in a place where the fish is ぴちぴち splish-splash fresh and prepared in front of your eyes.

Similarly restaurants that specialise in crayfish dishes usually present them alive in tanks. Be mindful though that in hot climates one needs to have everything fresh in order to prevent food poisoning. These days air-conditioning is a more practical and visually less in-your-face solution.

This is a Korean food stall on the market. The offer of snakes, centipedes, sea stars and spiders is just a bit too much out there for us, but not to worry, people seem to like the taste. We did go to an Okinawan-style restaurant in Tokyo once and there they had snake on the menu. People seemed to enjoy the menu, although we were just too squeamish.

Shop: street vending 露天商

Street vending   露天商   ろてんしょう  rotenshō

road-heaven-business = conducted-under-heaven..

01_650px

Street vending seems part of the Japanese street scene. It is quite strictly licensed, so it can only be in certain districts, on certain days and certain types of stalls. Often street vending is associated with festivals, holidays, seasons, etc. Many street vending businesses specialise in a particular type of food and "they do the rounds" between towns and districts.

Often stall keepers present food, maybe local delicacies, but the stalls could also be licensed to sell "antiquish" household goods, clothing etc. Usually in a certain district in town.

Very famous markets are held every weekend in 原宿  はらじゅく  Harajuku, in Tokyo.

The above example is an interesting one, because all Japanese were wondering how to pronounce it. The first option seemed the most likely. The problem was everyone knew what it meant, so it was settled with "whichever".

Actually the answer is:

Each district in Kyūshū, but actually that would be true for the whole of Japan, has developed its own style of pottery depending largely on cultural identity variations as well as on the clay available to the potters. Kyūshū is particularly well-known for its handsome pottery. Large kilns are found mainly in Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures.
