Clothing: western style 洋風

As you can see there is absolutely nothing typically Japanese about the clothing that Japanese people wear generally. It is all western style and the shops are full of it. Just like in western stores the goods are produced most likely in China, or India or Malaysia and then shipped to Japan. During the year there are so many sales in so many  stores that the supply is almost never-ending.

If there is something a bit different, it would have to be what Japanese find acceptable on their T-shirts. I would think that this particular brand of humour would be seriously frowned on. However, 80% of the Japanese public would not read the stuff, understand the stuff and frankly care about the stuff. It's in English, so it must be cute. If the same message were written in Japanese the reaction would be very different indeed.

20151005_112101 20151005_112011

In between it all is some stuff from Nepal. The people who made it would not have received the kind of money that Japanese would pay for it in their shop, but hey, who would in a western society?

20151005_111801We haven't got a clue what an ANAP girl is, but obviously someone finds it attractive, otherwise it wouldn't sell.20151005_111832 20151005_113438 20151005_113433

One also notices immediately that all the mannequins are taller, slimmer than the average Japanese by a long shot! There are many Japanese youngsters who are tall and they all play basketball, but the average Japanese is nowhere near it.

20151005_113212At Japanese weddings, the bride and groom usually change from kimono to a western-style wedding dress to a ball gown for the main party. These look like one of those main party ball outfits.20151005_111923 20151005_111920 20151005_111753Miss ANAP is back again with full industrial strength application.20151005_111854 20151005_111931 20151005_111825 20151005_113151 20151005_113200

Every year Japan is hit by dozens of typhoons. The picture above is warning for number 26. They don't even give them names anymore. The typhoon winds are so strong that much damage can be done and invariably the people lose their home in landslides or severe flooding. Sometimes people even lose their life.
.

As a country people are usually really well prepared and building and road construction is solid and built to last. Together with earthquakes and other natural disasters, Japan as well as Taiwan, Philippines and coastal Korea and China have learned to cope, be it sometimes at a tremendous cost. Clearly accurate weather forecasts also help to limit damage and prepare the population. The picture above shows the effects of one such typhoon on the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

8.01 LAMI L3 Read: New Zealand

.
What kind of country is New Zealand?
.
.
New Zealand is like Japan an island nation and a north-south thin, long country.
.
.
Next-door Australia is a huge country, far away to the west.
.
.
The Tasman Sea is between Australia and New Zealand.
.
.
And to the north and the east and the south is the Pacific Ocean.
.
.
New Zealand is surrounded by the sea.
.
.
It has two large islands, called the North Island and the South Island.
.
.
South of the South Island is a smaller island called Stewart Island.
.
.
Two thirds of New Zealanders live in the North Island.
.
.
Wellington in the far south of the North Island is the capital of this country.
.
.
But, the town with the largest population is Auckland and it is situated towards the north of the North Island.
.
.
One third of this country's
population lives in Auckland.
.
.
We are living in Hamilton and it is about 135 kilometres to the south of Auckland.
.
.
It takes about an hour and a half by car.

JLPT N4 風 wind, a cold, style

.
The word 風 かぜ kaze has three different meanings. The first two refer to the sound and the picture. It means wind, but it could also mean a cold. The idea simple means that you catch the wind and therefore you catch a cold. In English we also say we caught a draft, meaning we caught a cold.
.
The third meaning is related, but in this context it means style. Think of it as the style the wind brings in - you feel it, but you cannot see it.
.
Here are three examples:
.
Sneeze
.
私は風を引きました。
わたしはかぜをひきました。
watashi wa kaze o hikimashita
I caught a cold.
.

.
外は強い風が吹いています。
そとはつよいかぜがふいています。

There is a strong wind blowing outside.
