Health: old age 歳

Oldage1

There have always been old people; it's a fact of life. As written records grow and become more detailed it is also clear that quite a few Japanese people are among the longest living in the world. On the 1 April 2015 Mrs Ookawa passed away and she was recorded as the last Japanese person to have been born in the 1800s.

116

What is also interesting is that a photo exists of her as a child, after all, photography was not all that common and would have been quite expensive in the early 1900s.

Oldage2

Many people think that a good diet with "strong genes" seem to be the reasons for longevity. Science backs up that diet makes a difference. When asked what her secret was, Mrs Ookawa was reported to have said that she was wondering about that too. Humour must have been hers, her whole life..

JLPT N5 一 one, 1

You would think this is the easiest kanji in the whole language, it certainly is to write. However, reading is a little trickier. It tends to be いち ichi one, but there are also some words where it is pronounced as ひと hito one, depending on the combination of kanji. There are even あてじ ateji special readings, still meaning one. Of course, students can misread it in katakana words where the dash means long sound.

Here are examples of the most common words:

一日 いちにち ichi-nichi one day long

Here: one word a day in English conversation. By the way, that still means only 365 words in a year, which isn't all that much. Anyway, you get the idea. They mean steadily.

However, 一日 can also be pronounced as ついた tsuitachi and then it means the first day of the month.

Every first day of the month is the first day of being connected.

sai
Both kanji mean age さい sai. However, the one on the left is the modern one and the one on the right the classical one. In official governmental documentation one might see the one on the right.
.
Age: the kanji on the right hand side contains  stop and  become and  one and little. In other words: a stop when you become one little bit more older. Every year you stop to reflect on becoming one little bit older.
